Center for Excellence

The Center for Excellence consists of a cluster of specialized programs at one site that is specifically designed to address the needs of students whose significant challenges prevent them form accessing the general education curriculum in traditional ways. A series of short-term interventions has been developed to support the social/emotional, behavioral and academic needs of specialized populations and prepare the students for re-entry into their zone schools whenever possible. The purpose of the Center for Excellence is to provide intensive, specialized supports in the area of need to ensure access to the curriculum and help students achieve academic excellence.

Interim Alternative Educational Setting (District Tutoring)

There are two 3 hour sessions (8:15 – 11:15) and (12:00 – 3:00) for students on a long term suspension. This educational environment is staff with a certified teacher and support tutor.  Special education services for academics are monitored by the special education staff from the sending school, and all related services are provided by the on site therapists.

Diagnostic Center

The Diagnostic Center is part of the Interim Alternate Education Setting housed at the Center for Excellence.  It is designed to provide an educational environment where students receive all special education services, while participating in additional testing by the clinical psychologist within the mandated 45 days. A certified teacher and a support tutor provide individual assistance to students assigned to the diagnostic center. Special education services for academics are monitored by the special education staff from the sending school, and all related services are provided by the on site therapists.
Students are referred to the Diagnostic Center by building principals, when all building based supports have been exhausted and the Special Education Team feels they need additional testing to determine next steps.
Prior to placement an Individual Education Program meeting is held with the parent and all members of the educational team.  An extended evaluation is completed outlining the additional testing needed, along with a change in placement form to reflect the Center for Excellence. Upon completion of the extended evaluations, a Team Meeting is scheduled to review the results and make recommendations for services and appropriate placement.
