Chief of Social, Emotional and Behavioral Learning
Mr. Florez brings 20 years of experience in the fields of human services and education to the Holyoke Public Schools. Mr. Florez began his career as a residential counselor, and medical case manager prior to entering the field of education as a behavioral technician in the Hartford Public Schools. Mr. Florez became Hartford’s Safe School Climate Coordinator which ultimately led to the creation of the Department of Climate and Culture. In this position, he developed a system-wide restorative framework and oversaw- the implementation of character education programming, bullying prevention, and attendance initiatives. Additionally, under his leadership, Hartford was selected to participate in federal initiatives such as My Brother’s Keeper and Re-thinking Discipline due to decreases in the use of exclusionary practices and district-wide chronic absenteeism. Most recently, Mr. Florez served as the Managing Director of Social-Emotional Learning for UP Education Network working with schools in Springfield, Lawrence, and Boston. Mr. Florez is a native of Cali, Colombia, and earned his B.A. in Sociology from Central Connecticut State University and his M. Ed. in Education from Cambridge College.
In this role, Mr. Florez is charged with:
- providing support to HPS adjustment/guidance counselors;
- coordinating our trauma and mental health services;
- leading the system-wide development of social/emotional and behavioral tiers of support;
- enhancing the development of child study teams at every school; and
- overseeing our family, community and equity efforts.
