PRESS RELEASE – Holyoke Educators Team Up with Gary Rome Hyundai to Make Home Visits
Holyoke, Massachusetts – Representatives from Gary Rome Hyundai used their luxury golf cart to drive educators from the Maurice A. Donahue School through the neighborhoods of their students for their recent home visits. “This is such a fun and unique collaboration with Gary Rome Hyundai,” stated Iwona Langlois, Integrated Arts K-8 grade teacher.
Partnerships between home and school yield a great community of learners and are critical to the educational experience of students. “The focus of the visits is to let families know that we want open communication, and it is connected to our value of nurturing meaningful relationships,” stated Marc Swygert, Principal of Maurice A. Donahue School. “We also want families to feel as though they are a part of the school community.”
A dozen educators from the school visited eighteen homes. Gary Rome provided transportation to the students’ homes who live in the neighboring Tokeneke and Farnum Drive areas. Some educators drove to other homes that are further away from the school.
“By having a teacher travel to the student’s house, parents may be more likely to voice their concerns, speak candidly, and let the teacher into their lives,” said Tom Drohan, Assistant Principal. “Home visits give parents and teachers the opportunity to meet, simply to talk, and collaborate for the benefit of the child they both care about.”
The educators brought books, notebooks and other school supplies to the students and their siblings. “When parents are more familiar with their child’s teacher, they are more likely to become involved with their child’s learning and in school activities and volunteering,” added Swygert.
Holyoke Public Schools educators participate in home visits and neighborhood walks periodically during the year. These are examples of unique and thoughtful ways of engaging and connecting with families.
