Holyoke High School Hosts Academy Signing Day

Incoming sophomores celebrate choosing a new track of study as Holyoke prepares to launch first ever linked-learning academies this fall

HOLYOKE, Massachusetts – While most students are saying goodbye to the school year this month, some 400 Holyoke rising sophomores are getting an early start on what’s to come in September.

The students will be the first class to participate in Holyoke’s redesigned high school experience featuring four theme-based linked-learning academies designed to prepare them to acquire 21st-century skills such as thinking, problem-solving, creativity and collaboration.

This Thursday, June 7, the students and their families will take part in an official Signing Day Celebration at 1:30 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium on the 500 Beech Street campus. The students will sign a letter of intent to attend one of the four academies they chose earlier in the spring:

  • Community and Global Studies Academy
  • Technology, Engineering, and Design Academy
  • Performing and Media Arts Academy
  • Medical and Life Sciences Academy

“This is a major milestone for Holyoke High School, our students and their families,” said Dr. Stephen Zrike, Holyoke Public School’s Superintendent. “We are all excited about next year and this new and innovative way to help our students achieve their goals.”

Work on the academy system has been nearly two years in the making with student and parent input, multiple public feedback sessions and advice from the business and higher-education communities.

An academy is defined as a program of study comprised of a series of courses, work-based experiences such as job shadowing and internships with local companies and projects built around the academy’s theme. Each academy will also include regular curriculum courses — English, math, science and social studies.

“We want the students and their families to feel excited about their choices and the great opportunities that lie ahead,” said Holyoke High School Interim Principal Dana Brown.

Signing Day will feature remarks from Zrike, and Brown, and multiple teachers from across all areas of discipline.
