DLC Acknowledges “On-site Monitoring No Longer Needed” at Holyoke Public Schools TIP Program, “Substantial Progress” has been made

Holyoke, Massachusetts – Holyoke Public Schools (HPS) has been recently informed by the Disability Law Center, Inc. (DLC) that there is no longer a need for on-site monitoring at the district’s Therapeutic Intervention Program (TIP) located at William R. Peck School.  The district was acknowledged for the “substantial progress that has been achieved” at TIP.

In a letter dated October 25, 2018, addressed to Holyoke Public Schools Receiver/ Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Stephen Zrike, Jr., the DLC provided a brief overview of the progress made to date: “there have been substantial across the board improvements which have transformed the program.”

“In addition, DLC has determined that at this point, there is no longer a need for on-site monitoring” of the program which was a previous requirement of a settlement reached in February 2016 with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, HPS, and the DLC stemming from a December 2015 public report regarding the care of children at TIP.  The DLC “will continue to review data and consult with HPS as needed, to support the on-going improvements to the program.”

Dr. Zrike is pleased that Holyoke Public Schools has been recognized for the substantial progress that has been made in regards to the TIP Program. “I commend HPS staff for their great effort in this regard.  We appreciate the acknowledgment from the DLC and we will continue collaborating to ensure that TIP continues to be improved and transformed.”
