Receiver Search Information

Search Process for Receiver of HPS

With the departure of Holyoke Public Schools Receiver Dr. Stephen Zrike at the end of June, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has begun a search for a new Receiver.  Commissioner Jeffrey Riley shared in his 1-7-20 letter to the HPS community, “Students in Holyoke have greater opportunities now than they did when he (Dr. Zrike) arrived, and we will continue to build on the foundation that he helped create.”  Commissioner Riley wants to ensure that all members of the Holyoke community contribute to the search process for a new Receiver to lead HPS “by articulating the characteristics and qualities they would like to see in that individual.”

There are several opportunities coordinated by DESE and Great Schools Partnership (a consultant and partner) for families, staff, students, and community members to provide input on the “characteristics and qualities they would like to see (in a Receiver).”

Two Community Forums were held and attendees had the opportunity to participate in focus group conversations. The groups used the following three questions:

    • Describe your ideal superintendent/receiver for Holyoke Public Schools. What are the most important qualities and attributes the next receiver should have?

    • What are the most important knowledge and skills the next receiver should have to be successful in Holyoke and continue to accelerate the progress in the district?

    • What other considerations, if any, should Commissioner Riley take into account when selecting the new receiver for Holyoke Public Schools?

Thank you for completing the survey that was available until February 17th to share your input and thank you for your willingness to participate and for your thoughtful input during this process.

There will be more details in the coming weeks and months regarding the changes ahead. Dr. Zrike will work closely with DESE and the community to ensure that the transition to a new leader for the Holyoke Public Schools will be smooth.

Steve Sell, from Great Schools Partnership, discusses the work taking place at HPS and the receiver search process (Video from Holyoke Media).
