Teach to One Math

Exciting math program for 9th Grade – Teach to One: Math

Effective fall 2017, the 9th-grade math teachers at Holyoke High School are employing a sophisticated program called Teach to One Math (TTO) to better target individual needs and help students master Algebra 1.  Mathematics and the sciences are critical to the 21st-century students’ success in the high-paying high-demand technical sectors of work.  Algebra 1 is the key to success in later courses.  Yet, Algebra 1 is the course most often failed by students in Holyoke and across the country.

“One out of 5 young Americans does not graduate from high school…Why? The chief academic reason is they failed ninth-grade algebra,”

-Political scientist Andrew Hacker, author of “The Math Myth and  Other STEM Delusions.”

Knowing this, the math team and administrators at Holyoke High explored Teach to One (TTO), a program that targets both Algebra 1 and background math concepts students have not yet mastered.  After considerable research and visits to 3 sites to see TTO in action, the math teachers were unanimous in choosing to use TTO for many 9th grade students.

“One of the biggest challenges as a teacher is that all students learn at their own pace. What do you do when half of your class is ready to move on with a concept, and other half still needs more support? Teach to One places every student, everyday, in a position to succeed based on their readiness. Additionally, students can track their progress on various math skills, enabling them to really take ownership of their learning. We couldn’t be more excited to see the effect that Teach to One will have on our incoming 9th grade class.”  -Mike Reagan, HPS HS Math Teacher and TTO Core Teacher

TTO is teacher-led and uses sophisticated technology to analyze data daily to personalize the learning targets for each student.  The program identifies targeted skills for each student and also assigns purposefully chosen collaboration groups clustered by student needs.  Teachers use the data to develop lesson plans targeted at the next learning goals for individuals and small groups.

“This truly is the ideal classroom, where all learners are being challenged at their levels ‘plus one’ and their needs are truly differentiated to the individual student. We look forward to the learning that Teach To One can offer our students and look forward to the successes that our students and staff will have in the 2017-2018 school year.” -Dustin Rose, HPS HS Math Department Head and TTO Teacher
