Raised hands in the air with text: Here! ¡Aqui - Juntos Podemos, Together We Can

School is not the same when a student is not here: Here to learn, here to socialize, and here to be a part of our school community.

For all students to fully benefit from their learning experiences at school, students should attend school on time, ready to learn, every day.

“Students who maintain strong, on-time attendance throughout the year feel a greater sense of belonging and connection at school,” said HPS Executive Director of the Student and Family Experience Steven Moguel. “Students with good attendance are also more likely to become strong readers and mathematicians, and they are more likely to graduate on time.”

Every absence—and even just a few minutes of tardy time—can affect a student’s social experiences and academic performance. Being present at the very start of the school day is an important part of building community, allowing students to socialize with their classmates and start the day as a group, Mr. Moguel emphasized.

“We have a growing, diverse, and exciting student body. Each student is a valued member of our community, and we can’t get to know our students unless they come to school each day. For us to learn how to best support each student, they have to be here.”

This year, students will be marked tardy if they arrive after the official start of the school day:

  • After 7:45 a.m. for HHS North, HHS Dean, Peck, and McMahon

  • After 8:45 a.m. for Sullivan, Donahue, E.N. White, Kelly, Lawrence, and Morgan.

Students who arrive late to school must report to the office to obtain a class admittance slip before heading to their classroom.

“Everyone at HPS is here to support students to help them achieve on-time attendance,” Mr. Moguel said. “Families and students are encouraged to reach out to their school’s Family and Community Engagement Coordinator if they need any help or resources to support good attendance. We will do our best to help families secure clothing and food if needed. We can help with physical and mental health resources. We can even assist by scheduling automated wake-up phone calls and texts sent directly to students’ cell phones. Whatever it takes, we want to help make it happen.”
