Dean Technical High School senior Eriel Suarez Baez was recognized alongside top students from across the Commonwealth at the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA) Outstanding Vocational Technical Student Awards Ceremony in Worcester on Wednesday, April 16. This recognition highlights students who demonstrate exceptional skill, leadership, and commitment to their trade, representing the very best of Career and Technical Education across Massachusetts.

Eriel is completing his studies in the carpentry program at Dean Tech this spring. He plans to pursue a career in public service, with long-term aspirations of returning to education as a vocational instructor, giving back to future generations of students.

“Eriel’s journey at Dean reflects perseverance, growth, and a deep commitment to both his craft and his community,” said Career and Technical Education Director Joel McAuliffe. “After transferring into the carpentry program as a sophomore, he quickly distinguished himself through his work ethic and determination to master the trade. He consistently sought additional learning opportunities, staying after school and fully engaging in hands-on training to accelerate his development.”

Eriel’s efforts paid off, as he has emerged as one of the program’s top students and a leader among his peers. “He has become the kind of student others look to, both in the shop and throughout the school community,” Mr. McAuliffe said, noting that Eriel is widely recognized for his technical abilities and also his professionalism, compassion, and the respect he shows to those around him.

“Eriel is the kind of student you don’t forget,” said carpentry instructor David Montanez. “I’ve had the opportunity to watch him grow not just in the trade, but as a young man. He came in willing to work, willing to learn, and over time you could see his confidence build. I care deeply about my students, and seeing Eriel develop into someone who takes pride in his work, supports his peers, and carries himself the way he does, that’s what this is all about.”

Eriel’s success extends beyond the classroom. As a participant in the school’s Cooperative Education Program, he secured employment with Western Builders, where he demonstrated professionalism, technical skill, and reliability in a real-world construction setting. His co-op performance reinforced his classroom learning and also led to him earning the highest hourly wage in program history.

In addition to his co-op placement, Eriel works after school as a dedicated staff member at Capri Pizza in Holyoke, balancing long hours between school, work, and his career training. Despite that schedule, he remains fully committed to his growth and to supporting those around him.

Eriel is also actively engaged in the Holyoke community through his involvement with Train 42, a local initiative focused on youth development through fitness, nutrition, and mentorship. The program creates opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop discipline, and connect with positive supports in their community.

“Eriel’s story reflects the best of our school community,” said Dean Principal Rosie Caracciolo. “He is a young man of strong character who has taken advantage of every opportunity in front of him. Whether it’s in the shop, at work, or in the community, he shows up with integrity and purpose. We are incredibly proud of the way he represents Dean Technical High School.”
