September 15 officially marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This year’s theme is “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”
Holyoke is a multicultural city—and HPS is a multicultural school system, with more than 80 percent of our students belonging to the Latino community. Through educational displays in hallways, dancing the bachata during music class, and reading titles such as Carrie Lara’s “The Heart of Mi Familia,” students at HPS will learn, celebrate, and share their own stories to celebrate the month.
Learn:
The National Museum of the American Latino has several free, virtual exhibits to learn about the historical impact of Latino and Latina figures in the United States. Visitors can also view art from past and present Hispanic artists, and can access educational resources in English and Spanish.
The Holyoke Public Library is home to a robust collection of Spanish-language books and media, and features works on Latino history in Holyoke, across Massachusetts, and the United States.
The Springfield Museums recently opened two new exhibits featuring art from the Museo de Arte de Ponce: “Markets, Foodways, and the Essence of Place” and “Legacies of Surrealism.” Both exhibits highlight work by Puerto Rican and Latino artists.
Celebrate:
