The National Honor Society (NHS) is a premier nationwide organization for high school students (grades 10-12) that recognizes excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Founded in 1921, it boasts over 1 million members across U.S. and international chapters, aiming to prepare students for college and career success. Key Aspects of NHS: Four Pillars: Membership is based on Scholarship (academic achievement), Service (voluntary contributions), Leadership (resourcefulness), and Character (cooperation, honesty). Requirements: While minimum GPA requirements vary by local chapter (often a 3.0 or 3.5+), students must meet the established standards and undergo a faculty council selection process. Membership Benefits: Members gain access to exclusive leadership development, college planning tools, and national scholarship opportunities. Chapters: Managed by local school advisers, with over 25,000 chapters operating globally.

Interim Superintendent Soto recently surprised Jennie Oesterreicher, our director of communications, with an excellence award. She was nominated by Chief of Strategy Erin Linville, who noted Ms. Oesterreicher’s communication expertise and calm guidance during challenging situations.
“Ms. Oesterreicher holds incredibly high expectations for herself, yet supports others around her to meet high expectations, on behalf of students,” said Ms. Linville. “She has established really strong relationships with colleagues throughout the district, and people trust her advice and know that they can go to her and the communications team.”
Congrats, Ms. Oesterreicher! 🥳

Daylight Saving Time officially ends at 2 a.m. tomorrow, Sunday, November 2 in Massachusetts—so be sure to set your clocks back one hour late Saturday evening or Sunday morning!
While some digital clocks will automatically adjust for seasonal Daylight Savings Time changes, many won’t.
The annual fall back to standard time means there will be one hour less of daylight in the afternoons and one additional hour in the mornings

Language translation and interpretation services in school aren’t just helpful — they’re essential! Families have a right to equal access to education, which includes having someone available in the language that you speak during meetings, school-wide events, conferences, and more. When one of our 150 qualified interpreters perform this work, barriers between families and school are removed.
At HPS, we aim to have as many interpreters as possible in each of our buildings by helping teachers, FACE coordinators, counselors, and more become certified interpreters. If you are a current staff member who speaks English along with Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, Portuguese, or Arabic, this free program might be for you.
