Holyoke Public Schools wrapped up its month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on October 15, with each school offering its own celebrations and classroom learning opportunities.

Festivities at Holyoke High School Dean Campus on Wednesday, October 11 are captured in this 23-minute video. The assembly was hosted by students and included readings of the history of Hispanic culture in this country. The celebration also included several choreographed dances that were met with great enthusiasm. Teachers, staff, and students participated, along with Superintendent Anthony Soto who spoke at the event.
Holyoke High School North’s celebration on Friday, October 13 can be seen in its entirety in this58-minute video. Saxophonist and composer Jonathan Suazo was the guest performer at North, where he was accompanied by the HHS Band. Students also read poetry, there was a fashion show, and Mayor Garica addressed students assembled for the program.
Holyoke is a multicultural city with 81 percent of our students and more than half of our city’s residents identifying as Latino or Latina, so this recognition is especially important here. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the diverse contributions and experiences of American citizens whose roots come from Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America, and Spain.
