Nearly every seat was taken for Thursday night’s Black History Month celebration at Transitions Academy, titled “A Little Bit of Soul.” The celebration, guided by master of ceremonies and Transitions student Armando Zambrana Droz, featured 11 students performing a three-act program for an audience of family, friends, and community members.

The program began with  a group dance number titled “Funga Alafia,” which paid homage to West African traditions and demonstrated how dance can symbolize joy, community, and unity. The second act, a short skit titled “The Walk Home,” featured students in conversation about the challenges faced by marginalized groups throughout history. Student Aniya Gomez helped close the program by leading the room in a rendition of “This Little Light of Mine,” and encouraged all attendees to sing along.

“Through these performances and shared moments, ‘A Little Bit of Soul’ uplifts every voice,” said Transitions Academy director Corrine Moguel, who described the night as “a celebration of resilience, creativity, and enduring strength that honors the vibrant contributions of Black communities.”

Following the student performances was a special presentation: The inaugural Transitions Academy Black History Month Leadership Award was presented to Donahue Principal Dr. Marc Swygert, honoring his years of school and community leadership.

“When we were new to this community, Dr. Swygert welcomed us with open arms,” said Mrs. Moguel. “His leadership has made a difference for countless Donahue students, and we are lucky to have a leader like him as a role model for our community.”

A communal meal of soul food—fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and more—invited attendees to “break bread” together as the night concluded.

“Coming together to celebrate is so important,” said Aniya. “And I can’t wait to perform again next week.”

The student performers will showcase their program during the School Committee meeting on Monday, February 9, at 6 p.m. in the Fifield Room at HHS Dean. The performance will also be streamed via Zoom.
