Brick wall with text Ethnic Studies Block Party

Students in the Ethnic Studies: Leadership and Action class will host a vibrant end of the year community celebration on Friday May 29, from 5-7 p.m. at Holyoke High School North. This event is designed to bring together HPS families with children of all ages, as well as community members who are not affiliated with HPS.

The free event will feature food, music, inflatable games, art activities, and a community thrift store offering free clothing and household items donated by staff and students.

Organized primarily by 11th grade students, along with several seniors, the event will reflect what the students have learned throughout the year about community organizing, systems of power, structural racism, and ways to challenge injustice through collective action and care.

This year’s celebration will embrace a tropical atmosphere inspired by Haitian, Puerto Rican, and Dominican cultural experiences, with organizers describing the event as having a “Bad Bunny Super Bowl” energy. Decorations and activities will highlight themes of unity, culture and creativity, including flag-inspired art displays and tie-dye tote bag stations.

In addition to entertainment and activities for all ages, organizers hope the event will create a welcoming environment where students, families, and community members can connect, celebrate diversity and support one another.
