The Peck School building is set to be demolished this fall to make room for a new middle school for approximately 550 students in grades 6-8. While this new building will offer improved learning facilities, there is also a sense of loss as the Peck School has served the Holyoke community for almost fifty years. Two murals at the school's entrance from 2010 have become symbolic of its history. Though these murals cannot be preserved before the demolition, they have been documented through photos https://bit.ly/3EGXmce and videos https://youtu.be/SLnPLnjh0rs. The ceramic tile murals resulted from an after-school program where each tile represented notable school moments or individuals.

Families are reminded that all school-aged children should be current on their routine vaccines including their recommended COVID-19 vaccines. Families should keep school records up to date by providing updated immunization information to their children’s school nurse following annual physical exams and routine immunizations or within 60 days of the start of the school year, as stated in the HPS back-to-school packet. During the last few years, there has been a concerning drop in routine immunizations for children and adolescents. Routine vaccination coverage is improving but has yet to recover among all groups of children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend children catch up on routine childhood vaccinations and get back on track for school, childcare, and beyond. Contact your child’s school nurse or your health care provider if you have questions about immunizations.

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education has launched the Tomorrow’s Teachers Scholarship Program to address the state’s teacher shortage. College students in qualifying programs who want to teach in a MA K-12 public school could earn up to $25,000 annually towards their college education. HPS third-grader Mirabelle Hines won first place in the “Best Mixed Medium” category among entrants in grades K-5 for a painting she created and entered in a contest this summer sponsored by the Holyoke Preservation Trust to celebrate Holyoke's 150th anniversary.

By communicating their needs, students or families can receive a bag of essential grocery items every Friday at dismissal. This fall, our district's Health Services and Facilities teams are collaborating with the Massachusetts Asthma Action Partnership (MAAP) and Health Resources in Action. Today marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Holyoke Public Schools and schools and communities across the nation will commemorate this occasion with various classroom activities and integrated learning across all schools. This annual celebration is observed nationwide from September 15 to October 15. It highlights the culture, history, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. 80% of HPS students and 20% of HPS teachers identify as Hispanic/Latino, so this is an especially meaningful celebration in Holyoke.

Holyoke Health Center’s dental team is back in Holyoke Public Schools continuing to provide safe, quality preventive dental care and education to students through the free Oral Health Screenings Program. Families who would like their children to participate in the portable dental program at school should complete and sign the consent form sent home with children during the first week of school.
