Steven Santiago with teammates and coaches

Steven Santiago, a junior at HHS North, thought he was just going to attend the students vs. staff volleyball game alongside the rest of the student body. Little did he know that he was actually the guest of honor for a surprise ceremony on Wednesday, May 7.

Principal Lori McKenna played it cool while she introduced the Western Mass News crew to the gymnasium full of students, telling students that the news crew was there “to see if the students could finally pull off a win against the staff,” (a teasing reference to the staff’s win during January’s students v. staff basketball match). However, once the film crew was set-up, she passed the microphone to reporter Nicole Oberg for the big reveal: Western Mass News, Gary Rome Auto Group, and the entire varsity wrestling team were there to honor Steven.

Startled by cheers and applause from the staff and students, Steven was soon in front of the camera for an interview with reporters, who highlighted his positive attitude and outstanding wrestling accomplishments. His story recently aired on Western Mass News.

In addition to the surprise celebration, Steven received a scholarship for $1,000 from Gary Rome, which can be put toward college expenses after he graduates. He also received a gift bag with items to help keep his car clean, a three-month pass to the Gary Rome car wash, and a photo op with a giant check.

Steven is a record-setting varsity wrestler, having set records both in Holyoke and statewide. This year, he achieved his 101st career win during the New England championships, where he was ranked one of the top 12 wrestlers in New England. Steven also serves as captain of the team.
