Students huddle up in gym of Boys and Girls club

A record number of students from Sullivan and Peck middle school students participated in the fall season of the Play Ball program this year, with 68 students from the two schools playing volleyball each week from early September through late November.

The afterschool intramural sports program has been offered for more than five years at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke, through a partnership between Holyoke Public Schools and the Play Ball Foundation. Each season offers opportunities for middle school students to play a variety of sports for fun and to develop athletic skills and a mindset for good sportsmanship.

“With Play Ball’s volleyball program now concluded for the season, it's time for interested middle school students to turn to basketball,” said HPS Manager of Extended Learning Sam Garcia. “Participants will practice after school on Mondays and Tuesdays in December. Beginning in January, practice will continue on Mondays or Tuesdays, along with scheduled games on Wednesdays beginning January 7.”

Basketball season ends in mid-March, and then soccer and volleyball will resume soon after.
