After seven months of negotiating, the Holyoke Public Schools and Holyoke Paraprofessional Association reached a tentative agreement on Tuesday, October 28 that will make Holyoke Paraeducators the second highest paid paras in the area. This agreement is subject to ratification by union membership and the School Committee, and district leaders are optimistic about its approval.
This is the first contract for paraeducators since the district returned to local governance after a decade of state receivership and demonstrates a shared commitment to the future of our schools and community.
“The agreements reflect months of discussion, collaboration, and compromise, all aimed at reaching a fair agreement for Holyoke paraeducators while balancing the needs of students and the district’s financial position,” said Superintendent Jackie Glasheen.
Highlights of the agreement include:
Competitive pay: Salaries that would rank second highest in the area, with an average increase of 20.8% over the life of the contract.
Increased longevity pay: Longevity payments would start at $1,000 after 15 years of service and would increase to $2,500 after 30 years—the highest longevity payments in the area.
Enhanced benefits: The contract agreement includes new assault leave benefits, along with improved sick and personal leave.
Stronger voice: The contract also provides additional opportunities for paraeducators to share input and help inform district decisions.
“We are thankful for the paraeducators who engaged in this process and worked toward a shared solution,” Superintendent Glasheen said. “This agreement demonstrates what is possible when we work together to support our employees, students, and community.”
