A group of Dean grads enter the gymnasium for their ceremony

With more than a few proud tears, 69 HHS Dean seniors became HHS Dean graduates during a ceremony in the gymnasium on May 29.

Each student received a diploma after meeting graduation requirements for high school diplomas and their vocational training in their career-technical programs.

The ceremony featured student remarks from salutatorian Leyksa Rodriguez Melendez and valedictorian Patrice Laguerre, with additional remarks by Principal Roseanne Caracciolo, Superintendent Anthony Soto, Mayor Joshua Garcia, and School Committee Vice Chair Dr. Yadilette Rivera Colón. While the speeches were diverse, each touched on two key ideas: The power of vocational education, and the value of bilingualism.

Of the students recognized during the ceremony, 15 graduated with honors and 9 with high honors. In addition, 16 graduates are members of the National Technical Honor Society.  Another 9 students graduated with the Seal of Bilteracy. Additionally, outstanding Vocational Technical Student of the Year, Jayden Hildigunnarsson, carried a sign from his award ceremony.

Among the 69 graduates, all nine of Dean’s Career and Technical Vocational programs were represented. The cosmetology program, with 13 graduates, had the most graduates, followed by 11 from the culinary arts program, 10 from auto collision, 9 from carpentry, 6 each from the advanced manufacturing and diesel technology programs, and 5 each from electrical, health assisting, and program and web development programs.

Additionally, three of Dean’s graduates received degrees after completing their coursework through Holyoke High School’s Opportunity Academy’s Success Center and the Gateway to College program. OA Principal Phelipe Johnson attended the ceremony to deliver diplomas side-by-side with the HHS Dean staff to celebrate the three students.
