During the busiest and loudest times of the day at Holyoke High School North, one room is designed to remain calm.
During the 2024-25 school year, staff members Gosia Murray and Juan Perla worked together to design a therapeutic space for students who experience overstimulation in a typical classroom environment. The first-floor converted office space features low lights, soft places to sit, and guidance from Ms. Murray and Mr. Perla for students who come to visit. While in the quiet space, students can focus on their social and emotional needs with the help of staff, take in some alone time, or connect with peers in a gentle environment.
“We wanted to create a space where students can develop relationships,” said Ms. Murray. “All students are welcome. We love offering this as a space to take a break when your body is tired, and also when your mind is tired.”
This video, filmed in late May, highlights the room’s features and benefits, as well as Ms. Murray and Mr. Perla’s hopes for the space to grow.
