Monday, August 25 marked the first day of the 2025-26 school year for students in grades 1-12—and the first time students at McMahon Elementary School set foot on their brand-new playground.
“What makes this playground especially meaningful is that it is inclusive, where every child no matter their ability can play here,” said Principal Karyn McDermott. “That means our students don't just share the same space; they can share the same experiences. They learn empathy, teamwork, and friendship while having fun together. It's a place where every child belongs.”
The new playspace was made possible with funding through a Community Development Block Grant received by the City of Holyoke last year. School officials and students alike are thrilled that grant funds were allocated to construct a new and improved place for McMahon students to play.
“As we all know, recess is very important for kids,” Principal McDermott said. “Play gives them the movement and fresh air they need to return to the classroom focused and ready to learn. It builds problem solving skills, resilience, and creativity. And just as important, it gives our children moments of pure joy in their school day. This playground is more than equipment. It's a symbol of community, belonging, and opportunity for all of our students. And we couldn't be more proud to open it today.”
Completing the playground was one of many construction projects that HPS undertook this summer, and it was one of the most highly anticipated.
“It's a great feeling to be able to accomplish this project over the summer and have it ready for day one for the students of McMahon,” said Director of Facilities and Maintenance Sean Sheedy. “The students are going to love it and enjoy it for many, many years to come.” He also pointed out that the state-of-art playground is low maintenance, which will make it a safe place for children to play for decades to come.
