students and staff reading and participating in reading activites

Rocket Into Reading took flight on Thursday, May 14 as more than 150 HPS students and family members gathered at the Holyoke Public Library. The event was held in partnership between HPS and the Holyoke Public Library aimed at encouraging  students in grades Pre K-3 to be excited about reading and the resources the library has to offer.

Upon arrival, students were given a map of the library featuring a checklist of engaging activities to complete, turning the event into an interactive adventure. Each completed stop brought them closer to the final mission, earning their very own library card. In all, 141 students left with their newly printed library cards, which they can now use when they return to the library on future visits.

Despite the weather, the excitement inside never slowed down. Families gathered throughout the space as staff and students shared their favorite stories, creating a welcoming atmosphere that celebrated reading.

“It was a very joyful event,” said Associate Director of Dual Language Education Laura Espinoza Mufson. “Families were having fun in the library, playing and participating in interactive activities. This event really centered around the joy of reading.”

Students explored hands-on stations that included a Lego construction zone with students, family, and staff working on story telling. Other areas featured read-aloud sessions and craft stations where students created their own small books to take home. A special guest appearance from Clifford the Big Red Dog in partnership with Scholastic added to the excitement.

Pizza and refreshments helped make the event feel like a true celebration, giving families time to relax and enjoy the experience together. By the end of the event, students left with more than new library cards: They took with them a sense of pride and a deeper connection to reading, Ms. Espinoza Mufson said.
