Holyoke Public Schools’ Dual Language Program will reach full PreK-12 implementation during the 2026-27 school year, marking a major milestone for an initiative that has steadily expanded across the district.
With the addition of Grade 12, students who began in the programs’ earliest cohorts will now have the opportunity to complete their entire PreK-12 education in a dual language setting. District educators say the dual language program offers more than the opportunity to learn two languages. In the classrooms, students regularly share stories about their families, cultures, and traditions, creating meaningful discussions while exposing classmates to perspectives they may not encounter in a traditional monolingual setting.This year the district is developing a senior capstone course that will allow Grade 12 students to complete their final project in both English and Spanish that will highlight their bilingual skills they have developed throughout their dual language education.
As the program reaches full implementation, the district continues to recruit and support bilingual, Spanish speaking educators for its four dual language schools. “Our Dual Language Program relies on bilingual teachers, Spanish speaking teachers, that want to come here and work within our program,” said Associate Director of Dual Language Education Laura Espinoza Mufson. “We are very lucky to have so many talented teachers across our entire district across all four schools and they really help us to make this program become a reality.”
