For students in Holyoke Public Schools' Summer Theater Intensive, the two-week program offers far more than a chance to perform: It is also a place to build confidence, step outside comfort zones, and form lasting friendships.
The free program is offered this summer in two different sessions at Holyoke High School North for students entering grades 6-12 this fall. The first two-week session wrapped up on Thursday, July 16. The second session begins today, Monday, July 20. Both sessions were offered under the direction of theater and media teacher Bevan Brunelle.
Some participants signed up for both sessions, while some signed up only for one. The final showcase for session 2 is set for 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on July 30, with a performance for families and friends at 5 p.m.
In a talk after their final showcase from session 1, students described a program that pushed them to try new things: singing, dancing, acting, and performing in front of an audience, many for the first time. Several said the experience helped them come out of their shells, while others pointed to the friendships they built as the most meaningful part of their time in the program. Students also learned new skills along the way, from singing while dancing to collaborating with peers of different ages and backgrounds.
Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia, whose son and daughter participated in session 1 of the program, joined the post-show discussion on July 16, praising participants for the talent and energy they brought to the stage. Mayor Garcia noted how many talented young people there are in the community and encouraged students who may be hesitant to give theater a chance.
