For Lisette Martinez, becoming a published children’s author has been her dream since childhood.

Over the summer, Ms. Martinez released her first children’s book, “The Extraordinary Adventures of Emma and the Dragon.” Her love of reading and writing began at a young age and was encouraged by family members, many of whom worked in education.

“When I was growing up, every room in my house had books,” said Ms. Martinez. “I have a deep love for books, and I always wanted my name on one.”

Inspired by her daughter and her love for playing and building, the story follows Emma, a young girl and a dragon as they go on an adventure to solve a kingdom’s problem. All Emma wants to do is help her community, but many people tell her she is too small to make a difference. Even so, Emma continues forward with confidence and determination.

“She was playing with building blocks one day, and her imagination came out.”

Writing is just one part of Ms. Martinez’s connection to young readers. She has spent more than 20 years working in Holyoke Public Schools. She currently works  as a reading interventionist at E.N. White Elementary School.

Ms. Martinez said her experiences working with children have reinforced her belief in the power of stories to help young people learn and grow. With “The Extraordinary Adventures of Emma and the Dragon,” she hopes to encourage children to embrace their imagination and find joy in creating their own adventures.

“I really wanted to emphasize kindness as an approach to a problem.” said Ms. Martinez. “I want people to think anything is possible.”

Ms.Martinez hopes to make this a series and continue to write more stories about Emma and her adventures.

“The Extraordinary Adventures of Emma and the Dragon” is available online and at local booksellers including, Flora in Holyoke, and A New Chapter in West Springfield.
